PSY358: Psychology: Sensory Abilities and Disabilities

This unit explores how humans experience the world around them through senses and chiefly vision, audition, smell, taste, and proprioception; and how these biological, sensory inputs are used in the psychological process of perception. Students will examine: the physiological foundations of sensation and perception; psychophysical methods; phenomenology; deficiencies in sensor abilities; and issues related to the societal label of Disabilities.

Lectures/tutorials/laboratories/seminars: 3 hours per week.

Prerequisites

PSY141 Introduction to Psychological Science OR PSY171 Introduction to Applications of Psychology OR PSY173 Introduction to Psychological Research Methods.

Exclusions

Students who have successfully completed PSY216 Psychology of Perception may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Notes

Students are strongly recommended to have completed PSY351 Psychology: Biological Bases of Behaviour before enrolling in this unit.
