PSY218: Psychology: Self and Society

This unit explores the concept of 'self'; the relationship between our identities in the social world and our experiences of self. It considers how gender, ethnicity, age, and sexuality shape the ways in which we think about ourselves and others, as well as our treatment of those who do not share our identities. It also considers the political and ideological implications of particular ways of thinking about 'self' and how particular identities and states of being are promoted or marginalised.

Prerequisites	PSY141 Introduction to Psychological Science or PSY171 Introduction to Applications of Psychology or PSY173 Introduction to Psychological Research Methods or PSY107 Introduction to Social Psychology.
Exclusions	Students who have successfully completed PSY218 Self and Identity or PSY219 Psychology; The Individual and Society or S357 Social Psychology II may not enrol in this unit for credit.
