| Unit Description: | Examine the reasons behind the proliferation of ethnic and nationalist disputes, and the reasons why nation-states have problems in politically managing multiculturalist and ethnic separatist claims. This involves discussing the competing ideas of multicultural nationalism, cultural (assimilationist) nationalism, and civic nationalism. Cases of violent conflict are discussed as well as cases, such as Australia and Canada, where the relationships between civic, cultural and multicultural claims remain partially unresolved. Students are encouraged to focus on a case study of their choice. |
