POL161: Asia-Pacific in the Global System

The unit examines developments in the Asia-Pacific region from the perspective of international studies. It is concerned with the ideas, interests and organisations which are driving major developments in the new world order. Issues examined include: the hypothesised end to ideological conflict in the post-Cold War era; prospects for greater democratisation; globalisation and the opening of markets; pressures for 'good governance'; the US after September 11; environmentalism; and the social and political impacts of new communication technologies.
