School: School of Social Sciences and Humanities
Unit Description: The first half of this unit gives an historical overview of some of the principal theories about mind and soul: Plato's immortal ecstatic soul, Aristotle's form-matter account, Epicurus' materialist thesis, Descartes' substance dualist account, and arguments against dualism. The second half focuses on contemporary theories and includes topics such as functionalism, computation, intentionality, the new empiricism, and global-holism theory. As examples, we will consider such puzzling test cases as android dreams, blind-sight, qualia, twin-earth, zombies and zimboes.
