| Unit Description: | Since World War II Japan has become an economic superpower, establishing what is widely regarded as the only stable liberal-democracy in East Asia. This unit examines the political processes and social change involved in these developments. One aim is to investigate conventional wisdom about topics such as Japan's collectivism, social welfare provision, and political stability. Another is to examine the causes and consequences of social and political change, as well as the relevance of Japan's experience to the outside world. |
