| Unit Description: | For students who have no prior knowledge of Japanese. Introduces basic communication skills in both spoken and written language. Using communication-based situational practice, the majority of classroom time will be spent on oral work. The unit covers topics related to students' everyday life, and is based on practical situations. By the end of the unit students should be able to hold simple conversations in Japanese, covering a limited range of topics, and have a good grounding in the written language. |

| Contact Time: | Language classes: 4 hours per week for S1 option. |
| Exclusions: | Students who have successfully completed H171/JPN171 Introduction to Japanese and students who have studied Japanese at Year 11 level or above may not enrol in this unit for credit. |
