| Unit Description: | This unit examines the dramatic changes which have taken place in Indonesia since 1965, with particular emphasis on the last decade. It focuses on the relationship between media, contemporary culture and political and social change, exploring popular music, contemporary literature, print, electronic, and 'new' media. We discuss the forces which shape contemporary Indonesian media, culture and politics, such as ethnicity, gender and class, in the context of the interaction between elite-dominated 'national culture' and the practices of other classes. |
