Unit Description: Focusing on Western society from the eighteenth century to the present, this unit explores crime and punishment from an historical perspective. Crime is examined in relation to social changes, protest, class and gender along with the evolution of the punishment and detection. Material will be drawn from the United States, Britain and Australia, with topics ranging from archaic game laws to modern serial killers.
