Unit Description: In this unit the major techniques employed in proteomics - the study of the global expression of proteins by cells - will be explained and demonstrated. Laboratory activities will concentrate on 2D gel electrophoresis, mass spectrometry and the use of bioinformatics for protein identification. Students will be required to develop a proposal for the specific application of proteomics to address a research problem. They will present and defend a report on their proposal before an audience of experts in the field.
Enrolment Options: Not Available 2008
Contact Time: One-week intensive workshop with lectures, hands-on experiments and online computer laboratories. Attendance at student presentations.
Exclusions: Students who have successfully completed BIO503 Techniques in Proteomics may not enrol in this unit for credit.
