BIO369: Evolutionary Biology

This unit is concerned with processes that drive evolution and which produce the diversity we observe in living organisms. It focuses on the theoretical basis of evolution and explores how evolution can be studied. Topics include: natural selection and microevolution, evolutionary strategies in survival and reproduction, speciation, patterns of macroevolution and mass extinction, biogeography, coevolution, the evolution of breeding systems and sexual selection. The unit provides an understanding of evolution fundamental to those studying the biological sciences.

Prerequisites	Completion of or concurrent enrolment in N372/BIO372 Genetics AND completion of at least one of: N261/BIO261 Animal Diversity, N265/BIO265 Plant Diversity, BIO287 Plant Diversity (Marine Science),N268/ENV268 Ecology. Or permission of Unit Coordinator.
