BIO314: Forensic Toxicology

This unit integrates the history of forensic toxicology with the biochemistry, chemistry and pharmacology of the area and illustrates it with case histories centred on victims, villains and scientists. Training is provided in the practical application of analytical chemistry techniques to the determination of drugs, alcohol and other organic/inorganic toxins in body fluids and contaminated products within a forensic framework. Techniques studied include: high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, anodic stripping voltammetry and mass spectrometry.

Contact Time

Lectures/workshops: 3 hours per week; laboratories: 4 hours per week for 4 weeks.

Prerequisites

M240/PEC240 Analytical Chemistry; N270/BIO270 Biochemistry 1 or V261/BMS261 Human and Comparative Biochemistry; successful completion of, or concurrent enrolment in, M340/PEC340 Instrumental Analysis.

Exclusions

Students who have successfully completed BIO373 Forensic Investigation may not enrol in this unit for credit.
