School: School of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology
Unit Description: Students will gain a sound understanding of fundamental aspects of fish biology and their importance for managing fisheries successfully. Emphasis will be on describing the habitats, reproduction, age and growth rates of different species. Case histories of selected fisheries for crustaceans, molluscs and finfish will be discussed. Other topics: the theoretical background of stock assessment models and the application of management tools; the role of aquaculture in the development of new fisheries and the maintenance of existing fisheries.

BIO205MURDOCH: Semester 2, Internal
BIO505MURDOCH: Semester 2, Internal
Contact Time: Lectures: 2 hours per week; workshops: 5 during semester.
Notes: Students of BIO505 are required to read the background literature more extensively and to demonstrate greater depth in their understanding of the topics covered in the unit than students of BIO205. They must demonstrate a greater comprehension of the subject matter and be able to integrate to a greater extent the concepts that are covered in the lectures.Maximum enrolment will be 40 (full-time equivalent) and on an internal basis only.
